VMWare Support
Mimosa Systems, Inc. supports customers using NearPoint deployed in a VMWare environment.
Mimosa Systems, Inc. will provide technical support for NearPoint in VMware virtual environments in an identical manner as with NearPoint on other supported x86-based or x64 based systems without requiring reproduction of issues on native hardware. Should Mimosa have reason to identify the virtualization layer as the root cause of an incident, the customer will be required to contact the appropriate VMWare support provider to resolve the virtualization layer issue.
This applies with the following caveats:
- The virtual servers must provide the same performance characteristics (# of CPU, RAM) as the non-virtual servers specified by Mimosa in our System Architecture documents.
- Virtual hard disks\VMDKs are not recommended.
- Mimosa recommends raw\direct access to all storage used by the NearPoint data volumes.
- Disk block level access is required for all shadow volumes.
- CIFS is not supported for the shadow volumes and not recommended for the Index or IOR volumes.
- RAW mounted volumes can be configured via iSCSI, FC connected LUNs, or DAS partitions on the ESX host
- All storage must provide disk latency under 20 ms on average and a max of a 50 ms peak during normal operations or during IO Meter testing, with the NearPoint IO profiles. Each volume must also provide at least 80% of the IOPS recommended in the sizing or architecture and design document from Mimosa before NearPoint is installed or can be fully supported.
- Windows performance counters will be used to evaluate any performance issues with NearPoint. If the storage performance is exceeding the recommended latency, the underlying storage performance issue must be addressed before additional troubleshooting of NearPoint performance and related issues can be carried out.
