SharePoint Archiving Now Helps Avoid Mistakes of the Past

I was out with some prospects this week and was asked why I thought SharePoint archiving would be a hot product.  The first reason is that SharePoint itself is a hot product, and value-add solutions will follow the path that SharePoint blazes.  But the real reason that SharePoint archiving is poised to take of is that IT heads don’t want to make the same mistakes they made a decade ago with email.

Email became a mission-critical application almost overnight.  Most organizations waited too long to implement archiving to deal with email volume, and many still suffer the pains (especially in regard to eDiscovery).  With SharePoint, smart IT leads want to make sure they manage it centrally right away – they don’t want to let the storage get out of control before they tame it, or let the content get so unwieldy that the chances of managing its retention consistently are nil.

In addition, IT folks have learned the hard way that systems with too much data are hard to backup and recover.  There is an interesting blog post here about how item-level recovery is the most-pressing issue in SharePoint shops.  The good news is that Mimosa offers both archiving and recovery in one box with Mimosa NearPoint for SharePoint.  Early on in SharePoint deployments, IT can be assured of centralized management, storage control, simple eDiscoveyr, and fast recovery.

Let’s not repeat the mistakes of the past – archive SharePoint as early as you can!
