Beware of the Hidden Costs of Exchange 2010 Archiving

If you are considering Exchange 2010 for archiving, instead of a 3rd-party solution, be careful to consider two important requirements that can increase the cost and delay implementation.  First, you should be aware that the new archiving features of Exchange 2010 require enterprise CALs.  If you are not already using enterprise CALs, then you must pay the additional cost to upgrade.

Second, to leverage archiving with Exchange 2010 you must also upgrade to Office 2010 which will ship 6-9 months after Exchange 2010 ships. This will add a significant cost to an organization that has Office 2007 deployed and does not wish to upgrade  its desktop machines.

Exchange 2010 promises many exciting new features, but just beware of some of the hidden costs associated with the new archive mailbox.
